Evolution of Outsourcing

Outsourcing is not a new phenomenon. During 1960s and 1970s outsourcing started making its way in the area of finance and operational support in time sharing areas or processing service due to lack of affordability of computers and non-availability of skilled IT personnel. When vertical integration became a prominent aspect in the 1980s, the outsourcing of programming application had lost its steam. IT was considered a valued in-house function.

Organizations generally operated their information systems environment on a custom basis, developing IT infrastructure unique to each organization. In the 1990s as market matured, most of the companies were routinely outsourcing their Information systems functions as well as other functions like finance and taxation, business process units, call centers and other important function which were considered as taboo in initial stages.

Today, many corporate giants like P & G, IBM, and Intel are looking for total solution provider such as Application Service Provider (ASP), Business Process Outsourcing (BPO), e-business hosting and their outsourcing deals are remarkably innovative. These deals are extremely complex in nature and based on the service providers capability of developing, implementing and maintaining the large projects by mobilizing resources in terms of software, hardware and human resources.
